How to Be a Branding Rockstar

Want to know how to be successful?

Look to those that have come before you. Study their assets, their journey, and their tactics. Watch them as they work and you will learn more than you ever expected. These observations plus your strategic planning and hard work, you too can be a Branding Rockstar.

I call this “Follow the Rockstar.” It’s a concept I’ve shared again and again over the years. The idea is that you find someone you respect and follow what they are doing to learn as much as you can. This helps you to avoid some obvious mistakes and leapfrog over lessons you would’ve learned the hard way. Imagine watching someone walk a muddy path before you. By paying close attention, you can avoid where they slipped and know to be more careful in treacherous areas. This is literally how children learn from their elders.

The Rockstar is someone that is amazing at what they do, they are well-known, have great press, and have captured the attention (and loyalty) of their audience. Your Rockstar doesn’t even have to be in your industry. It makes sense if you are a small winery to look at Kendall Jackson or Korbel but what can your brand learn from Krave Jerky? What marketing gold does their journey have to offer you?

I have been working in social media for 9 years and when I started, there were very few big names to look to in order to learn. The social networks were small and the communities were much more tightly knit. I was able to strike up conversations with respected social celebrities to learn where they started and to ask specific questions about tactics. I wasn’t looking to “climb my way to the top.” I had legitimate questions that needed answering. There was no one locally I could talk to so I had to find others out there like me. Just about everyone I interacted with was helpful, friendly, and gracious. Real questions equalled real interaction.

Today I am the Branding Rockstar in my locale. By sheer perseverance and fortitude, I’m still here. I’m the mentor to hundreds of students and clients, new social media consultants, and marketers. I love what I do and I’m willing to help anyone that needs it.
